A new era in early learning at Wilderness

Established in 1884, Wilderness School is Adelaide’s oldest independent girls’ school, located in Medindie.

In 2023 Wilderness engaged Sarah to deliver its new Early Learning Centre, providing high-quality, engaging and beautiful educational spaces for young learners.

The new facility was required to meet the growing needs of the school and involved the refurbishment of a 1920’s single storey double brick residential building including demolition, new underfloor services, and new bathrooms, kitchens and areas to support modern learners, as well as a large extension to the rear of the property.

Maintaining the charm and heritage aspects of the building was a critical driver of the project, and the project team undertook extensive protective works, and leveraged relationships with Sarah’s network of high-quality specialist subcontractors, to replicate and restore the building’s façade and internal components.

Sarah’s excellent relationships with subcontractors and suppliers were also critical when sequencing works to accommodate long-lead specialist items including an innovative roofing profile manufactured in Europe.

Expansive landscaping was designed to integrate the new building into the school grounds and has created vibrant outdoor learning spaces including cubby houses, a mud kitchen, sand pits and water rills.

With the new ELC in immediate proximity to the operational school and several residential homes, Sarah’s team worked closely with stakeholders to deliver the works without disruption to day-to-day activities.

The beautiful new facility has doubled the capacity of the School to engage with a new generation of students.
